General information about the degree

This higher-level vocational course teaches you to design and make metal structures and parts, such as tanks, industrial pipework, and frames for buildings and warehouses. By the end, you will be able to do the calculations to size them, prepare the drawings, and organise how they are made and assembled.

You will study metal construction design, technical drawing, cutting, shaping and joining processes, programming of computer-controlled machines, and production management. You will also do work placements in companies in the sector. You could work as a project draughtsperson, CAD technician for boilermaking and steelwork, production planner, fabrication or assembly supervisor, or workshop manager in boilermaking, shipbuilding, petrochemical or structural erection companies.

It suits people who enjoy drawing plans and working with computers, and those who like seeing a part go from paper to machine and finally into place.
